. this was a long time coming. the last time the oakland police department actually had a class of new officers go through the academy, graduate, get their badge and hit the streets, that was in 2008, while oakland's crime problem keeps going up. today 38 new police officers got their badges here in oakland pinned for the first time by chief howard jordan. the numbers are sobering. right now oakland has 611 officers on the street. so this brings that number to 649. police chief howard jordan has said he'd like to have 1,000 officers helping to bring crime down. these new officers have been in the academy for about six months and will eventually be part of a new crime fighting strategy. chief jordan announced, of neighborhood policing. one of the biggest complaints is calling in a crime and not getting the reaction they hoped for. he said the new officers will help that and boost moral. >> we're not out there alone and city made a long-term commitment to staffing the department. it will help the citizens of oakland, one of the complaints we generally get is the response time, how long it takes for

was hit. we get more on developing story from ktvu's jade hernandez live in oakland where that young boy is being treated tonight and she has new information on just where this gunfire came from. >> reporter: hartsfield-jacksoni cs threw that 7-year-old boy to the hospital earlier this evening. we have whopper video of the helicopter arriving as children as hospital. hospital antioch police a the little boy is going to be all right. police are concerned how the shooter wound this boy. investigator say someone fired multiple gunshots into this home around 4:30 this afternoon during a family bbq. the 7-year-old was visiting with his family from out of town. no one else was hurt. investigators say the shooter fired the rounds from an area near the g street over crossing which can be seen from the backyard area. police have not made any arrest, but since thursday, oakland, richmond and now antioch have shyoung children rushed to children's hospital with gunshot wound. for now, antioch police are investigating this particular incident, but the good news is that little boy is going to be all r

are following breaking news out of downtown oakland. police are investigating a fatal shooting. christien kafton is live for us. >> reporter: let me tell you this is a large crime scene. it's spread out over five blocks here in downtown oakland. right now alameda county coroners office is on scene here just about to load the victim into a van to remove him from this scene. there was a very expensive sports car just about seven or eight minutes ago that expensive sports car was towed out of the area. we have video of what the scene looked like earlier. police say they responded to the scene around 3:00 this morning and found the dead man in the street with numerous shell casings around him. and there is another scene just about a block away with more shell casings there and a half block away again that very expensive sports car. it looked like ans aton martin vintage. that sports car is certainly part of this investigation. we saw investigators looking over it with flashlight and trying to get a little bit more information about that. as mike said a couple moments ago, this shooting happened when

at the hall of justice in san francisco, kron four news. serious accusations could cost two oakland city council members their jobs. both elected officials are said to have used their power to influence city business. and as kron 4's grant lodes reports, this news comes after an oakland city auditor released a report.which details improper behavior from 2009 to 2012. >> reporter: the council members accused of wrongdoing: desley brooks and larry reid. the audit claims there were 14 instances in which councilmembers or their aids violated the city's charter. among the findings: both are accused of directing staff members to use a specific contractor for the oakland army base demolition project. that contract.worth about 2 million dollars. the audit also alleges that one of reid's aids directed parking officials to fix two of the aid's personal parking tickets. as for brooks: the audit says she interfered in the management and renovation of two oakland recreation centers. including.selecting contractors, negotiating contracts, directing staff to process contracts, setting project deadlines

on a house in the oakland hills. it happened around 3:30 this morning on oakwood drive, the tree estimated to be 75 foot tall crashed down on the corner of the roof. the downed tree also brought traffic on oakwood drive to a stop. firefighters say they do not know what caused that tree to fall. >>> an investigation is underway into a crash involving a scooter and a santa clara county sheriffs patrol car. the accident happened before 12:30 this morning in the area of west heading street and the alameda. investigators are trying to determine if one of the drivers may have run a red light. two people on the it scooter were taken to the hospital but their injuries are not believed to be serious. the deputy in the patrol car was not hurt. the vehicle sustained damage to the right front bumper. a couple of san francisco police cars will be out of action after an unusual crash. officers were investigating an argument on the 4000 block of mission street. police say pickup truck sideswiped a patrol car, sending it into a second police car. witnesses say officers had to scramble to avoid getting hit

to help after two cars crashed in oakland and one tumbled down an embankment this morning on westbound 580. initial chp reports are that people were trapped in the white car you see here. crews did manage to free the victims, and we're told no one was seriously hurt. no word on what caused the crash. >>> developing news out of oakland. police are questioning several people after a double shooting killed one person and left another injured. shots broke out at a home around 1:30 this morning. two victims showed up at the hospital, one of the men died, the other is in serious condition tonight. oakland's s.w.a.t. surrounded the crime scene, a standoff ensued for nearly ten hours, and then police handcuffed and removed several people from the house. >> trying to figure out what really took place here. this is an active investigation. we're not sure what happened earlier today but we're looking to see whether or not the people that were detained were involved in the incident. >> it's not clear if the suspected shooter was among those detained. this killing is oakland's 18th 18th homicide of the
